Horseshoe Bend

Today was another travel day.  We had 3 hikes planned.  The first one was Wire Canyon, a slot canyon 8 miles off the main road on Cockscomb Road.  At first I didn’t want to go down the road because it was a dirt, but I really wanted to see a slot canyon so gave it a try.  We drove halfway down a washboard road and came to a washout.  At least there was room to turn around and go back.

Not for my RV.

Our second hike was Horseshoe Bend.  It was a mile walk in about 100 degrees, but so worth the view.

Yeah, I’ve got to work on those selfies. We totally covered up Horseshoe Bend.

The third hike was to Lava River Caves near Flagstaff.  We got to the road, and it, again, was dirt, this time 22 miles.  I refused to even try it.

We went from the best campground to the worst – Grand Canyon Caverns in Williams, AZ. This campground was chosen because we had to meet up with the River Tour at 7:30 AM the next day and didn’t want to drive too far. It’s on Route 66, and like most things on Route 66, it’s very old and looks abandoned. It was first come, first serve – something I haven’t encountered before. I had to test 4 electric pedestals before I could find one that worked. No sewer, hit-or-miss water, no internet and no phone service. And it looked like the park was in a middle of a sudden storm washout, which of course wasn’t fixed and made it hard to drive around.

Kind of a creepy campground. This was outside their restaurant and looked to be their only customer.
Tess cooking before the storm arrives. Notice empty campground.
