Grand Canyon

What a day!  We went on a one-day rafting tour with the Hualapai Indians on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

First we boarded a school bus for a 22 mile ride down yet another dirt road.
Then they loaded about 8 of us and a driver to a boat.
We started out in the rapids for the first part of the trip. You can see them in this photo. The water again looks like chocolate milk because they’ve had rain, plus they’ve been letting water out of the upstream dams to help fill up Lake Powell downstream.

I didn’t have my camera for the first half of the trip because we went down some serious rapids.  We all thought it was going to be a float trip, but instead it was a roller coaster soaking ride.  We hit those rapids and gallons of water would pour on us, totally soaking us.  The girls screamed for more.

We stopped at a waterfall, and I finally got a chance to see a slot canyon, but it took some work to get up to it, challenging all of us.

First part was a ladder up the rock face.
More ladders, plus pulling yourself up a rock face with a rope.

Travertine Cavern Falls, and proof that I made it up all those ladders and rock faces.
The second half of the ride was much more sedate, so we could carry our cameras without them getting wet. That’s our driver, Tigert.
What a way to see the Grand Canyon. My head felt like it was a bobble head twisting and turning to see all the views.

The river got wider with lots of sand banks.

We rode 56 miles down the river.  I have many, many more photos, but they all start looking the same.

We rode another bus back to the starting point.  It was a 2 hour ride back to our starting point, but this time mostly on paved roads.  It was one full day, but we still had to drive another 3 hours to our next campground.
