Kanab

We are camping at Dark Sky RV Campground in Kanab, UT. For all of us, this was our favorite campground.  First of all, it had a children’s area off the back. It had a sand pit where they could dig for dinosaur bones and stars which they could redeem for free ice cream bars. Then they had a zip-line which kept the girls occupied for hours, and hours, and hours.

They had a clubhouse with all sorts of snacks, an Alexia that you could direct to play any kind of music you wanted, and a couple of propane campfires where you could visit with other campers in the park.

I liked it because all the sites were pull-through (no backing in) and set far enough apart so you didn’t feel like you were in a Walmart parking lot like most RV parks (especially KOA’s). They had little shelters to offer some shade in the middle of the desert.

Then the bathrooms were designed to make you feel like you were in a very posh AirBNB. They had air conditioning, heated/cooled floors and your choice of indoor or outdoor showers.

Kanab is a funny little town. They call themselves Little Hollywood because more films were shot in Kanab than any other place except Hollywood. There were over 400 Westerns filmed in Kanab. They also said that this summer, Kevin Costner was in Kanab scouting out the location for his next series of films.

This was a set used by Kenny Loggins in one of his song’s video.

That night we went on a S’Mores tour. They drove us up to an old movie set that has appeared in several movies which I don’t remember.

This building and the scenery in the background has appeared in many movies.

They first showed us their herd of longhorn cattle. They let you pet these cows, but you really have to be careful because they they swing those horns around to precisely scratch the itch or chase away a fly on their hind quarters. One got me right in the mouth, but not hard enough to damage anything.

Daisy. The owner says he keeps them tame by feeding them graham crackers.
This guy had the longest horns of the herd.
Finally some s’mores, with homemade marshmallows and your selection of chocolate.

Kanab is also a Dark Sky city. They purposefully keep nighttime lights to a minimum for stargazing. I was so looking forward to seeing the stars, but both nights we were there it was storming. They call it their monsoon season, and when they get rain, they get all of a quarter of an inch. So we were treated to a lightening show instead of the Milky Way.
