Whale Watching

We had little expectations when we went out to look for whales.  This was because another group went out earlier in the day and they didn’t see any.  I also asked the local fisherman who took us cod fishing if he’s seen any and he said he saw two back in June, and here it is the end of July.  And everyone knew it was way too late to see an iceberg.

We went on the blue boat.  The company name is Dark Tickle, and they just acquired this boat from Northland Discovery.
Our host/guide is on the left, and Mike on the right, on the lookout for whales.  I sometimes use Mike’s photos, because he’s a bit more professional than I am with my iPhone.

We had a very successful trip.  First we found two humpback whales, one of which seemed to just be riding along beside the boat, surfacing at random.

They were big. When they flip their tail like this, they are going down under as opposed to skimming the surface.
A whale tail.

At one point, we heard the whale first – it blew through it’s blowhole, and seemed to breach right under the front of the boat where I was standing, scaring all of us with the noise and closeness of it.  It was way to fast to get a photo of that.

After we took a zillion photos, we headed back to the dock, and wouldn’t you know it, we spotted 3 more whales, a mother and her baby and one other.

One is going under. And you can see two others on either side, blowing.
The sun was setting behind us and it shone on the tail making it seem like it was lit up.

Here’s something different – a barnacle.  This will attach to the whales.

In my hand, for perspective.
