NewFie’s

As I’ve said before, every little coastal town we visit has a lighthouse.  So today we visited the lighthouse in Twillingate – the Long Point Lighthouse.

Long Point Lighthouse in Twillingate, Newfoundland.
Here’s what you see when you look over the edge.

What we all liked about this lighthouse was that it had good cell phone reception.  When we’d arrive, our phones would beep and chime with all the texts and emails coming in.  Our campground, several miles away from the cell tower here at the lighthouse, had no reception.

Later that night we went for a lobster dinner at the Dinner Theater.

My second lobster dinner. They always throw in a few mussels.

Where I come from, dinner theater is dinner, then a play.  Here, it’s dinner and a concert.

Look at all those accordions. The guy on the far left could play 15 different instruments. He even played a tin whistle for one song.
If I haven’t already, let me introduce you to the ugly stick. They adorn a stick with bottle caps that rattle, and use another stick to hit it, and stomp the boot on the floor to the beat of the music. This is a pure Newfie thing.
You can even buy one.  I wonder if my granddaughters would want one for Christmas.
When the Newfie’s make fun of themselves, they dress up in plain jackets, hats and rubber boots.
But I think the scariest thing is when they dress up as “mummers” at Christmas. Notice the plaid jackets again, the white hoods, nor’easter hats and various sticks. They go from house to house and when they speak, they speak on an inhale to disguise their voices.  Lots of drinking and dancing happens as well.

I guess I’ll stick this photo in this post – another Newfie thing.  Driving around Newfoundland, you will see these stacks of lobster traps everywhere – along side the roads, on the beaches, in people’s yards.  Catching lobster has a season, much like hunting deer back home.  You can only trap lobster for a couple of months in the spring, so these traps will be taken out of the water and stacked waiting for the next season.

Lobster traps.  And they are usually accompanied by stacks and stacks of firewood.
