Glacier 2

Posted on

After a solid day and night of rain, the sun finally came out.  We explored Glacier more, this time by boat.

This boat is named “Little Chief” and is the oldest boat in the park – 100 years. We rode on St Mary’s Lake in Glacier National Park.
I’m sorry, I can’t remember the names of these mountains. But look how green that water is. It’s caused by “glacial flour” which is the dust created when the glacier passes over rocks and grinds them into flour.

We rode right pass Wild Goose Island.  They are real proud of this island because it made it into the movie “The Shining”.

Wild Goose Island. The island is made of a very resistant (to the glacier) limestone.

The boat docked and we took a short hike to Bering Waterfall, which was flowing fast and furious with all the rain yesterday.

Bering Falls. Notice in the lower left how the stones are all different colors – red (from iron), green (from chlorine), and yellow.
And now for the tourist shot, at Bering Falls.

After dinner, we drove again looking for wildlife, but didn’t have any success.  But this time we stopped at the Many Glacier Hotel and walked inside.

These lights are all different sizes, shapes and colors. You can see the guests were seeking the warmth of the fireplace because it is still only about 50 degrees outside.

A nice end to a beautiful day.
