Trapp Family and Cold Hollow

I am in East Randolph, Vermont now. Not sure how it this place even got a name because it’s just a few houses, this campground and Floyd’s General Store. Floyd’s looks like something out of a museum with it’s wooden screen door, old wooden shelves and 5-7 chairs around the wood burning stove.

The campground sits on top of a mountain and the views are incredible.

There is a Veterans Memorial down at the bottom of the hill.

We had another bus tour today. They told us we were going to Cabot Cheese, but when we got there we discovered that there was also a distillery, a pewter shop, a chocolate shop and Patagonia. I was surprised when most of the people on our bus headed straight for the distillery. No wait, that shouldn’t surprise me knowing this crowd. COVID makes sampling a little difficult. Cabot gave out packaged samples – at least they still had samples unlike most places.

Next stop was Trapp Family Lodge. We had a lunch buffet there which was very good. Then a docent told us all about the difference between “The Sound of Music” and the real Trapp family. We were all so impressed we wanted to come back tonight and re-watch the movie.

Most of the Von Trapp singing kids were buried here. Some of the grandchildren still live and work here.

Then we stopped at Cold Hollow Cider – quite the tourist trap. I tried the cider slushee. Others bought the cider donuts. And the distillery crowd was busy sampling the hard cider.

I have noticed more solar panels up here in New England than I do in sunny Florida. Interesting thing is the angle – in Florida they are almost flat whereas in New England they are almost vertical.

The last stop was Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. They don’t do tours anymore and put everything outside, even a small gift shop. The only interesting thing to see there was the graveyard of retired flavors.

And of course, Marilyn and I are “Half Baked”…
